Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Financial Aid and Student Financial Resources, the Financial Aid Counselor may also receive direction from the Dean of Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success and the Provost. This position is responsible for developing and finalizing student financial aid files in accordance with institutional policies and federal and state regulations.

The Financial Aid Counselor works closely with new, continuing, transfer, and re-entry students to ensure financial aid packaging and counseling meets student needs. This position provides guidance on financial aid awards and assists students in understanding and navigating the financial aid process.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitates a high level of customer service to current and prospective students and their families by packaging financial aid in accordance with institutional, state, and federal guidelines. Guides students through the financial aid process to ensure proper awarding each semester.
  • Counsels incoming, continuing, and re-entry students in partnership with success coaches. Advises students on the availability of Title IV funds, state aid, and other financial resources. Collaborates with Admissions to ensure required documentation is received for financial aid processing.
  • Reviews ISIRs for accuracy and resolves issues such as verification requirements and SAR C-codes. Collects and reviews required documentation to ensure compliance with Department of Education regulations. Identifies and resolves conflicting information across student records.
  • Maintains current knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations. Assists in ensuring compliance with all governing agency requirements. Provides support for VA benefits and SNAP-related inquiries.
  • Ensures students are appropriately packaged with federal aid, alternative funding, or scholarships. Monitors and awards Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans. Processes financial aid in Banner and ensures timely disbursement of funds.
  • Revises award letters and communicates updates to students via email, phone, or other methods. Assists students with loan requirements such as Master Promissory Notes and entrance/exit counseling. Supports default management processes and reporting.
  • Provides updates to the Director regarding student eligibility and required documentation. Accesses systems such as NSLDS, COD, and FAFSA processing tools to review and update student financial aid records.
  • Conducts group presentations, workshops, and community outreach events to educate students on financial aid processes. Participates in orientations and registration events to assist students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education

  • Associate’s Degree.

Required Experience

  • Two (2) years of financial aid, student counseling, and/or accounting experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Considerable knowledge of federal and state financial aid programs.
  • Working knowledge of Title IV regulation.
  • Strong customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound professional decisions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-up.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Ability to interact effectively with students in both group and one-on-one settings.
  • Ability to represent the College in a professional manner.

Preferred Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

Experience

  • Two (2) years of experience as a financial aid professional or student counselor in an educational institution.
  • Experience working with federal and state financial aid programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of Title IV regulations.
  • Demonstrated customer service and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience conducting presentations and student outreach.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
